Connect your app to Slack

about 5 minBuildingchecked 2d agoOfficial page
The short version

You can connect your Lovable app to Slack to send messages, read channels, and automate tasks within your team's communication. You can also add your Lovable app directly to Slack as its own agent, allowing teammates to interact with it by mentioning it or sending direct messages.

Anyone building an app with Lovable who wants it to interact with Slack for notifications, summaries, or as an interactive agent.

Do this, in order

  1. 1

Open 'Connectors' in your Lovable dashboard and select 'Slack'.

This is where you manage all connections to external services like Slack.

  2. 2

Click 'Add connection' and choose 'App + chat connector'.

This option creates a shared Slack connection for your Lovable apps.

  3. 3

Give your connection a name, like 'Slack Prod', in the 'Display name' field.

This name helps you identify the connection within Lovable.

  4. 4

Select an 'Access Type': 'Connect as yourself' for personal use, or 'Connect as a bot' for shared team interactions.

This determines how your app will appear and operate in Slack, and you cannot change it later.

  5. 5

Review the 'Scopes' (permissions) your app will request in Slack and select only what's necessary.

Choosing fewer permissions improves security and makes it easier to get approval in Slack. You can change these later if needed.

  6. 6

Under 'Sharing', decide if the connection should be private to you or shared with other members of your Lovable workspace.

Sharing allows other project builders to use this same Slack connection in their apps.

  7. 7

Click 'Connect', then in the Slack window that opens, select the Slack workspace and authorize the connection.

This grants Lovable the necessary permissions to interact with your chosen Slack workspace.

Paste this into your project

Connect my Lovable app to Slack. I want to use it to send messages to channels and direct messages, read messages from public and private channels, list workspace users and channel information, and react to messages with emoji. I'll need to choose between connecting as myself or as a bot, and I'll review the permissions before authorizing.

Words decoded

Scopes
These are specific permissions you grant to your Lovable app, like 'send messages' or 'read channels', which determine what it can do in Slack.
Workspace
In Slack, a workspace is your team's shared environment where you communicate and collaborate, containing channels and direct messages.
Agent
When your Lovable app acts as an agent in Slack, it means it appears as its own bot that people can talk to directly or mention in channels.

Where people get stuck

  • Not having permission to install apps in your Slack workspace, which might require admin approval.
  • Forgetting to invite the 'Lovable App' bot to private Slack channels if you want your app to read or post messages there.
  • Not publishing your Lovable project before trying to add it to Slack as an agent.
  • Deleting a project before removing its associated Slack agent app, which can leave a 'ghost' app in Slack.
  • Expecting a shared Slack connection to respond to mentions or direct messages; for that, you need to add your app as a Slack agent.
