Connect a custom MCP server as a chat connector

about 5 minBuildingchecked 3d agoOfficial page
The short version

You can connect your own custom servers that speak the Model Context Protocol (MCP) to Lovable. This lets Lovable use information from your internal tools, private APIs, or custom data sources when you chat with it.

Anyone who wants Lovable to access their specific internal data or tools for better chat context.

Do this, in order

  1. 1

Go to 'Connectors' in your Lovable dashboard, click the '+' button, and choose 'MCP server'.

This opens the form to add a new custom server connection.

  2. 2

Give your server a clear name, like 'Internal CRM' or 'Analytics API'.

This name helps you identify the server later.

  3. 3

Decide how Lovable will connect to your server; usually 'Direct connection' is fine, but if your server is behind a firewall, choose 'Lovable static IPs'.

This ensures Lovable can successfully reach your server, especially if it's protected by a firewall.

  4. 4

Enter the full web address (URL) of your MCP server, for example, 'https://mcp.example.com'.

This tells Lovable where to find your server.

  5. 5

Select how Lovable should log in to your server: 'OAuth' (most common), 'Bearer token or API key' if OAuth isn't supported, or 'No authentication' if your server doesn't require a login.

This provides Lovable with the necessary credentials to securely access your server's data.

  6. 6

Click 'Add & authorize' (for OAuth) or 'Add server'.

This completes the connection process, making your server available as a chat connector.

Paste this into your project

Lovable, connect a custom MCP server for me. I'll provide the name, URL, and authentication details.

Words decoded

MCP server
A computer program that stores information and can share it with other programs, like Lovable, using a specific set of rules called the Model Context Protocol.
Model Context Protocol
A standard way for different computer programs to talk to each other and share information, especially for AI models to understand the situation or 'context'.
Chat connector
A link that allows Lovable to pull information from an external tool or service and use it as background knowledge when you're chatting with Lovable.
Live context
Real-time, up-to-date information that Lovable can access and use to understand your questions and provide relevant answers.
OAuth
A secure way for you to give Lovable permission to access your server without sharing your actual username and password directly with Lovable.
Bearer token or API key
A secret code that acts like a digital key, proving Lovable's identity and allowing it to access your server.
Allowlist
A list of approved internet addresses (IPs) that are permitted to access a protected network or server, while all other addresses are blocked.
Static IPs
Internet addresses that do not change. When Lovable uses static IPs, it means its requests to your server will always come from the same, predictable set of addresses.

Where people get stuck

  • Do not expect custom MCP servers to provide functionality for your published app; they are only for Lovable's internal chat context.
  • Do not treat Lovable's static IPs as a form of authentication; always keep your server's own security (like bearer tokens or OAuth) in place.
  • Do not try to connect a custom MCP server if the option is greyed out; a workspace admin may have disabled it.
  • Do not expect to see individual custom MCP servers in the Admin settings table; they are managed as a group.
  • Do not expect the 'Lovable static IPs' option to appear if you are not on an Enterprise plan or if it hasn't been enabled for your workspace.
