Import a website into Lovable from its URL

about 5 minFirst appchecked 3h agoOfficial page
The short version

You can turn an existing public website into an editable Lovable project just by pasting its address. Lovable rebuilds the visual design, text, and images without touching your original site or copying its backend logic.

Anyone who wants to redesign an existing website or move off an existing website builder without starting from scratch.

Do this, in order

  1. 1

Click the '+' button in the dashboard prompt bar, select 'Import project to Lovable', and choose 'Website'.

This opens the import tool designed specifically for public web addresses rather than raw code repositories.

  2. 2

Paste the full public address including 'https://' and click 'Import website'.

Lovable needs the complete public web address to load the page as a visitor would.

  3. 3

Confirm in the project chat that you own the website or have permission to copy it.

Lovable requires ownership verification before it reads the page and rebuilds the layout.

  4. 4

Prompt Lovable to add up to 10 additional linked pages from the same website if needed.

The initial import only captures the first page as your home page.

  5. 5

Ask Lovable to make forms functional and add backends for any dynamic data.

Imports copy visual elements only, leaving out original server scripts, databases, and form handling.

Paste this into your project

Compare the imported homepage with the original site and fix any differences in layout or spacing. Then, make the contact form functional so it saves form submissions into the database.

Words decoded

backend
The behind-the-scenes server and database that saves data, sends emails, or handles user accounts.
subdomain
A prefix added to your main domain (like blog.yoursite.com) that Lovable considers a separate website.

Where people get stuck

  • Contact forms will look correct but will not send emails or save data until you ask Lovable to wire them up to a database.
  • Pages behind logins or private local network addresses cannot be read; Lovable will only see the public login screen.
  • Do not request more than 10 additional pages in a single chat prompt or the entire request will fail.
  • Subdomains count as separate websites and cannot be combined into the same project import.
  • PDFs and downloadable files are not imported and must be uploaded manually.

The short version, steps, decoder and prompt on this page are written automatically from Lovable's own documentation and can lag or misread it. The official page is always the authority.
