Explore changes with drafts
Drafts let you try out changes in a separate copy of your project without affecting the main version. You can test new ideas, compare them, and then either add the ones you like to your project or discard them.
Anyone building an app in Lovable who wants to experiment with changes without immediately impacting their main project or published app.
Do this, in order
- 1
Click your project's name at the top of the editor to open the draft switcher.
This is where you manage all your project's drafts and switch between them.
- 2
Click 'New draft' in the switcher.
This creates a fresh copy of your project where you can make changes safely.
- 3
Chat with Lovable to make your desired changes within this new draft.
All edits you make here will only apply to this draft, not your main project.
- 4
Use the draft switcher to move between your main project and your drafts to compare your ideas.
This allows you to see how your changes look and behave compared to the original, helping you decide what to keep.
- 5
If you want to keep the changes, click 'Accept' in the draft (found in the top right, draft switcher, or '⋮' menu). If not, delete the draft from its '⋮' menu.
Accepting adds the draft's changes to your main project, while deleting removes the draft and its changes completely.
Paste this into your project
I want to try out a new design for my homepage without affecting my live app. Can you create a draft for me to work in? Once I'm happy with it, I'll tell you to accept the changes.
Words decoded
- Draft
- A separate, temporary copy of your project where you can make changes and test new ideas without affecting the main version.
- Main version
- The primary version of your project, where all accepted changes eventually land and from which you publish your app.
- Accept
- The action of taking all the changes from a draft and applying them to your main project.
- Publish
- The action of making the current version of your main project live and visible to your app's users.
- Update (a draft)
- Bringing any newer changes that have been made in your main project into your draft, so your draft is based on the most recent version.
Where people get stuck
- Remember that accepting a draft adds changes to your project, but it does not make them live for your users; you still need to publish your project separately.
- Be aware that any data you add, edit, or delete while testing in a draft affects your real app data, and deleting the draft will not undo these data changes.
- Some backend changes, like sign-in methods, secrets, or enabling AI features, must be made in the main version of your project, not in a draft.
- Deleting a draft is permanent; its changes cannot be restored.
